Every traveler’s dream is to see as much as possible. And with our rapid time – this is very important. Kazakhstan is a country of vast spaces. Day you can go by train, watching from the window a homogeneous landscape: feather grass steppe, saline or sandy desert. South Kazakhstan is the exception to this rule. South Kazakhstan is the part of Asia where you can see a lot in a short period of time. Every day you can see a new landscape here, every day you can get acquainted with dozens of new plants and new animals.
There are several mountain formations quite clearly differing from each other here. These are the Talas and Ugam ranges and the Karatau Mountains. The first is the axial ridge of the entire Western Tien Shan (the highest altitude is 4488 meters above sea level). It is also an expression of the most interesting geological, landscape, floristic and faunistic in the western Tien Shan. Here is the famous twenty-five kilometer canyon of the Aksu River with a depth of 500 meters and a width of one kilometer. And here, on the area of more than 100 thousand hectares, the famous reserve Aksu-Jabagly was created.
The Ugam ridge is adjacent to the Talas, and is like a threshold to a warmer, protected from cold streams, part of the Tien Shan. Here, on the southern slopes, walnut forests grow, and only on the Ugam ridge in Kazakhstan, the relict marmot of the Menzbir lives. The Karatau Mountains are a unique place. This ancient ridge is located in the meridional direction and is surrounded by deserts from three sides. He retained to the greatest extent the relict nature of his landscapes.In its flora 25% of relict plant species. A number of imprints of plants and animals of the Jurassic period (the so-called “fish shale”) were found in the shale rocks of the two sections of the Aksu-Jabaglinsky Reserve. The flora of the Western Tien Shan has more than 1,500 species (this is a paradise for botanists). It is enough to name one genus of tulips, numbering only six species on the territory of the reserve. In the Western Tien Shan there are 400 species of vertebrate animals, a white-bear bear, a bearded man, and many others.
Naturally, the foothill plains around each of the ridges are unique. Somewhere there are vast steppes, somewhere there are saline deserts, and somewhere within reach of the sands. And in each of them has its own “face”, its plants and its animals. The rivers that flow through them and the lakes that have arisen here are also unlike. Each of them creates its own microclimate, microrelief, its own plant community, and of course, its own community of animals.
And to each of these places an hour, two, maximum three hours away. And the road will always be interesting because it always passes through all the time a changing landscape.
